    التاريخ: 2024/03/05

Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, met on 5 March with the African Union High-level Committee on Sudan, led by Mr. Mohamed Ibn Chambas and including members Ms. Speciosa Wandira Kazibwe, former Vice President of Uganda, and Mr. Francisco Madeira, former Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Commission to Somalia. The two sides discussed all aspects of the Sudanese crisis, which has been ongoing for more than 10 months.

Counsellor Gamal Roshdy, spokesman for the Secretary-General, stated that Mr. Ibn Chambas provided a comprehensive explanation of the committee’s work and the steps it intends to take to help Sudan overcome its crisis. He and the committee members called for close cooperate with the League of Arab States in this regard.

Roshdy pointed out that Mr. Ibn Chambas briefed the Secretary-General on the outcomes of his meeting with General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, Chairman of the Sudanese Sovereignty Council, in Port Sudan.

The official spokesman added that during the meeting, Mr. Aboul Gheit emphasised the urgent need to swiftly reach a ceasefire agreement to salvage the Sudanese state, which has suffered significant infrastructure damage, especially in the capital, Khartoum, due to the ongoing conflict. This is essential to address the deteriorating humanitarian situation, resulting in millions of Sudanese becoming refugees and displaced individuals.

Mr. Aboul Gheit highlighted the League's efforts in collaboration with international partners, particularly the African Union, expressing gratitude for various international initiatives addressing the Sudanese crisis. He underscored the importance of cooperation and coordination with the government of the Republic of Sudan to ensure the success of these endeavours.
