Aboul Gheit calls for immediate cessation of escalation and prioritising dialogue in Yemen

​Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, expressed deep concern over the serious and rapidly unfolding developments in the Republic of Yemen, following the failure of the Southern Transitional Council to respond to the demands of the Presidential Leadership Council. He voiced hope for the immediate cessation of escalation in the governorates of Hadramout and Al-Mahra in eastern Yemen.

League's Secretary-General condemns terrorist bombing of Homs mosque

​Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, strongly condemned the terrorist bombing that targeted the Imam Ali bin Abi Talib Mosque in the Al-Dhahab district of Homs on 26 December, resulting in the deaths and injuries of a number of innocent civilians. He expressed his sincere condolences and sympathy to the families of the victims and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

​Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, called for the avoidance of escalation, the prioritisation of the supreme interests of the Yemeni people, and strict adherence to the unity of the country, in light of the recent developments in the governorates of Hadramout and Al-Mahra. He added that these developments further complicate the Yemeni crisis and undermine the principle of Yemen’s territorial unity.

​Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, welcomed the significant efforts undertaken by the Somali Government to ensure the holding of the first direct municipal elections since 1969. He described the move as an important and positive step that reinforces citizenship and constitutional legitimacy, and contributes to the promotion of civil peace and development. He called on Somali political forces to prioritise dialogue and national consensus in order to overcome the various security and political challenges, whether in confronting terrorism or advancing the state-building process.

Aboul Gheit condemns attack on UN base in South Kordofan

​The Secretary-General of the League of Arab States strongly condemned the drone attacks that targeted the Kadugli logistical base of the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) in South Kordofan State, Sudan, on 13 December. The attacks resulted in the deaths of six personnel and the injury of eight from the Bangladeshi brigade participating in the peacekeeping mission.

Aboul Gheit condemns Israeli forces’ raid on UNRWA HQ in East Jerusalem

​Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, strongly condemned the Israeli forces’ raid on the headquarters of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) in Jerusalem, describing the attack as part of an ongoing campaign by the occupation aimed at undermining the Agency’s role and dismantling the protection it affords to the rights of Palestinian refugees.
