  • Al-Thawadi conveys message from League Secretary-General to Somali President on implementing resolution supporting Somalia sovereignty and territorial integrity

    Ambassador Khalil Ibrahim Al-Thawadi, Assistant Secretary-General of the League of Arab States and head of the Arab Affairs and National Security Sector, announced that today in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, he delivered a written message from His Excellency Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, to His Excellency President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, President of the Federal Republic of Somalia. The message pertains to the execution of League Council Resolution No. 8988, dated 1/17/2024, titled "Supporting the Republic of Somalia in confronting the attack on its sovereignty and territorial integrity."

    Ambassador Al-Thawadi conveyed to the Somali President the various measures taken by the League of Arab States recently to support Somali positions and adhere to the aforementioned Arab resolution. These measures include letters addressed by the Secretary-General to the Secretary-General of the United Nations and the Presidency of the Security Council for February 2024, and to the President of the African Union Commission. He also outlined the diverse efforts of League of Arab States missions worldwide with relevant countries and organisations.

    Al-Thawadi further mentioned that the delegation attentively received President Hassan Sheikh's comprehensive perspective on the structure and substance of the ministerial group's operations, as mandated by the League Council's decision. Additionally, they discussed the collaboration between the League of Arab States and the Republic of Somalia. Al-Thawadi conveyed the Secretary-General’s wholehearted support for this Somali vision, geared towards fortifying its security, stability, territorial integrity, and sovereignty.

    The delegation plans to compile a detailed report for the Secretary-General, laying the groundwork for presenting the matter to the League Council during the upcoming March meeting. Subsequently, the issue will be submitted to the next Arab Summit in the Bahraini capital, Manama.
