    التاريخ: 2024/02/17

The Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, participated in the 37th session of the African Union Summit, commencing on Saturday in Addis Ababa, with broad participation from African country leaders and various African Union partners.

Gamal Roshdy, the spokesman for the Secretary-General, stated that Mr. Aboul Gheit delivered a speech at the summit, reiterating the League’s commitment to ongoing cooperation and coordination with the African Union to advance the robust Arab-African partnership.

The official spokesman added that Mr. Aboul Gheit highly appreciated all African positions expressing support for justice, law, and human rights concerning the Palestinian cause and Israel's aggressive war against Gaza. He emphasised the importance of persisting and deepening those positions to end the occupation and establish an independent Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders – the only rational solution to conclude the conflict. The Secretary-General also praised the efforts of South Africa in holding the occupation accountable and seeking justice through legal avenues at the International Court of Justice.

Roshdy stressed that the Secretary-General highlighted the League's consistent calls, in all decisions and meetings, to halt armed clashes in Sudan. The focus is on avoiding bloodshed, safeguarding the security of the Sudanese people, preserving their capabilities, and maintaining the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Sudan. Mr. Aboul Gheit underscored key priorities, including preserving Sudanese state institutions, expressing full solidarity with the Republic of Sudan in safeguarding its sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity. He emphasised incorporating the Sudanese state in any initiatives that promote a political path and and stressed support for efforts to achieve a comprehensive and sustainable ceasefire, such as those led by the Jeddah Platform.

In the case of Somalia, the Secretary-General appreciated the nation's achievements in various domains over the past year. He reiterated ongoing efforts by the League of Arab States to support Somalia in defending its sovereign rights, collaborating with the Federal Government of Somalia, the United Nations, the African Union, and relevant regional organisations to counter any threats to Somalia's unity and sovereignty.

Concerning Libya, Mr. Aboul Gheit urged all Libyan parties to pursue a political solution, overcome obstacles hindering electoral elections, achieve political stability, preserve unity and sovereignty, end foreign military presence, and enhance dialogue with neighbouring countries.
