  • League supports Somalia government, condemns MoU between Ethiopia and Somaliland as a violation of Somalia sovereignty
    التاريخ: 2024/01/03

The League of Arab States firmly rejects and condemns any memorandums of understanding that undermine the sovereignty of the Somali state. This includes attempts to exploit the fragile domestic situation or ongoing negotiations between the Somali people regarding the relationship of Somali regions with the federal government. Such actions, deducting parts of Somalia's territory, violate international law and jeopardise the overall territorial integrity of the Somali state, said Gamal Roshdy, the spokesperson for the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States.

Roshdy emphasised that the League of Arab States unequivocally supports the Somali cabinet's decision which declared the partnership and cooperation memorandum signed on 1 January 2024, between the Federal Republic of Ethiopia and Somaliland null and void, deeming it unacceptable. This move is considered a blatant violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia, as well as a breach of international law.

The spokesperson also highlighted the potential serious consequences of this action, warning of its impact on the proliferation of extremist movements. This comes at a critical time when the Somali state is exerting enormous efforts to combat such threats.
