  • Aboul Gheit welcomes unloading Red Sea’s Safer tanker

    ​Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, has expressed his satisfaction at the successful initiation of the oil transfer process from the deteriorating Safer tanker located in the Red Sea off the coast of Yemen to a replacement vessel. He underlined the critical nature of this operation in preventing an unprecedented environmental catastrophe in the Red Sea. He expressed optimism for the successful completion of the transfer process and commended the combined Arab and international efforts that have been instrumental in making this significant advancement possible.

    Gamal Roshdy, the spokesperson for the Secretary-General, extended a call to action to all relevant parties, encompassing governmental bodies, private entities, and environmental protection associations. Their participation is sought to ensure the completion of the funding required to finalise the task of fully emptying the tank. This endeavour encompasses vital activities such as thorough cleansing of the tank to eliminate oil residues and the careful dismantling of the tank structure to avert potential environmental hazards.

    The spokesperson emphasised the positive financial contributions made by various Arab nations towards the unloading process. It was underscored that safeguarding the ecological balance of this pivotal maritime corridor is an international obligation, necessitating the collaborative engagement of all entities capable of making a contribution.
