  • Temporary humanitarian truce in Sudan necessary: Aboul Gheit to Chairperson of the African Union Commission
    التاريخ: 2023/04/18

Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, has welcomed the announcement of a 24-hour humanitarian truce, considering it to be essential and a crucial step in providing the civilian population and the sick with an opportunity to deal with emergency humanitarian cases.

Mr. Aboul Gheit expressed his hope that all parties would respect the ceasefire and build on this step, which he believes could pave the way for an extension of the humanitarian truce.

According to Gamal Roshdy, the spokesman for the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Mr. Aboul Gheit discussed the matter during a recent phone conversation with Musa Faki, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission. During the call, the two leaders exchanged views on the dangerous situation in Sudan and explored potential ways to collaborate between the two regional organisations to bring about a halt to the escalation and restore calm.

The spokesman added that the two parties concurred that dialogue should prevail as a means to address the issues, in order to prevent further bloodshed of the Sudanese people and preserve the unity of the country.

The spokesman affirmed that the League of Arab States and the African Union have a long history of joint work and coordination with regard to Sudan and other issues of concern to the two organisations, adding that Aboul Gheit and Faki agreed to continue coordination and exchanging views on the situation in Sudan during the coming days.
