  • Arab Liaison Committee for Sudan holds its first meeting on the sidelines of the foreign ministers’ preparatory meeting in Jeddah

    The Arab Liaison Committee for Sudan held its inaugural meeting on 17 May on the sidelines of the preparatory meeting for the Arab Summit in Jeddah, scheduled for 19 May, following its establishment by a Ministerial Council decree on 7 May.

    Counsellor Gamal Roshdy, the official spokesman for the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, said that the committee comprises the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Arab Republic of Egypt, and the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, and is tasked with conducting the necessary liaison to achieve a comprehensive and sustainable ceasefire and address the root causes of the crisis in Sudan, in a manner that fulfills the aspirations of the Sudanese people for stability and security.

    He added that during the meeting, the committee members were briefed by His Highness the Saudi Foreign Minister on the latest developments in the ongoing talks, sponsored by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, aimed at achieving and consolidating the ceasefire between the conflicting parties, and providing essential humanitarian aid to civilians in Khartoum and other affected areas.

    The spokesman conveyed Secretary-General Aboul Gheit's emphasis on the importance of all parties adhering to the ceasefire as a critical step towards achieving a comprehensive cessation of hostilities, and creating the necessary conditions for a peaceful and inclusive resolution to the crisis in Sudan, encompassing all its various dimensions.
