    التاريخ: 2023/05/27

The Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, participated in the African Peace and Security Council meeting, which convened at the level of heads of state and government on 27 May to discuss the ongoing crisis in Sudan.

Chaired by His Excellency President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda, who is also the current session chairman of the Peace and Security Council, the meeting was attended by His Excellency President of the Arab Republic of Egypt Abdel-Fattah Al-Sisi, His Excellency President Ghazali Othman, President of the United Republic of the Comoros, President of the African Union, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, the Executive Secretary of IGAD, and heads of neighbouring countries of Sudan, among other dignitaries.

In his speech, Aboul Gheit stressed that the critical situation in Sudan demands a collective and concerted international effort to rescue the national institutions of the Sudanese state and prevent its collapse, as endorsed by the final declaration of the Jeddah Summit and the African and UN resolutions.

He referred to the recent Jeddah meetings between the Sudanese parties, which began earlier in the month, and urged all stakeholders to build on the progress made thus far to end the crisis.

The Secretary-General also stressed the importance of adhering to the outputs of these meetings, such as the humanitarian declaration and the short-term ceasefire agreement, and emphasised the urgent need to renew the truce and achieve a sustainable ceasefire agreement that respects Sudan's sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity. He further called for supporting the comprehensive Sudanese political track that would meet the aspirations of the Sudanese people for peace, security, and development.

Aboul Gheit also emphasized the need to increase efforts to meet the urgent humanitarian needs of the Sudanese population and for effective coordination with the Red Crescent, Red Cross, and United Nations humanitarian organisations in partnership with the relevant authorities. He stressed that it is crucial to accompany the Sudanese state in any efforts aimed at resolving the current crisis.
