Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary General of the League of Arab States, stressed that the announcement of the formation of the Constitutional Committee in Syria represents the beginning of the road to an end, calling on all parties to exercise a sense of national responsibility and transcendence over narrow interests in order to help this committee to complete its work.

Aboul Gheit addressed the high-level meeting organized by the European Union about the Syrian crisis on the sidelines of the 74th session of the UN General Assembly. An official source at the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States said that the Secretary-General stressed in his speech that the foremost danger facing Syria today is the conflict of interests and foreign agendas on its territory, stressing that the Syrian territorial integrity should be a priority for all, pointing out that the solution in Syria will not be achieved by dissecting the Syrian homeland into areas of influence under foreign domination of one party or another, adding that some regional powers see the destruction of Syria as an opportunity to expand and consolidate their influence, which is neither accepted by the Syrians nor by the Arabs, and will not pave the way for a long-term solution in Syria.

The high-level meeting was held under the auspices of the High Representative for European Foreign Policy, Federica Mogherini, and was attended by a number of foreign ministers of countries concerned with the Syrian crisis, led by Jordan, Turkey, Lebanon and Iran, as well as the UN special envoy to the Syrian crisis, Geir Pederson.
