Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, received at the headquarters of the General Secretariat, Pierre Krähenbühl, the Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA). The latter briefed him on the latest developments in the Agency's crisis and its efforts to maintain international contributions to its budget to ensure that UNRWA continues to serve 5.5 million Palestine refugees at a time of growing pressure and unprecedented skepticism.
An official source at the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States said that Aboul Gheit expressed to Krähenbühl his full support for his mission, expressing his special appreciation for his leadership of the Agency in these difficult circumstances, and his determination to continue to serve millions of Palestinian refugees, adding that the pressures on the Agency's objectives are clear and open to all. The Arab League refuses the violation of the status of the Palestinian refugee or undermining the UN mandate given to UNRWA, as stipulated in its resolution of 1949, and calls on all states to continue to support UNRWA for the vote will be held at the United Nations in November to renew the mandate of the Agency.
The source pointed out that the UNRWA Commissioner-General thanked the Secretary-General for his efforts in supporting UNRWA at the international level.
