An official source at the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States said that Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit is following with concern the developments of the exchange of fire in the border areas between Lebanon and Israel. Military action could spiral out of control, blaming the international community for controlling Israeli reactions that could push things further into internal electoral purposes.
On the other hand, the official source pointed out that preserving the credibility of the Lebanese state institutions before the international community should be a high priority in this delicate circumstance, and that the fact that one side or faction will make decisive decisions related to the war is not in the interest of the Lebanese state or the Lebanese people in general.
The official source stressed that the Israeli policy is aimed at undermining Lebanese cohesion and therefore the Lebanese should face this open plan by sticking to the institutions and unity of political and security decision in the hands of the state, and putting the interest of the Lebanese nation above any consideration.
