Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, welcomed the call by His Excellency President Rashad Al-Alimi, Chairman of the Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council, to convene a comprehensive conference in Riyadh to examine fair solutions to the southern issue. He expressed his appreciation for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s prompt response to this request by the legitimate Yemeni authorities, and for its announcement of readiness to host and sponsor the conference, with the participation of southern components.
Gamal Roshdy, the official spokesperson for the Secretary-General, quoted Mr. Aboul Gheit as stating that “the situation in southern Yemen has well-known historical dimensions and encompasses legitimate aspects that must be discussed within the framework of a comprehensive Yemeni process.” He stressed that “the policy of imposing faits accomplis does not serve the southern issue, but rather causes it serious harm by exposing the country to further fragmentation and disintegration.”
The spokesperson reiterated the position of the League of Arab States, as reflected in its successive resolutions on the Yemeni crisis, which is grounded in a commitment to Yemen’s unity and the integrity of its national territory.
