On the occasion of Arab Family Day, observed annually on 7 December, the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States reaffirms its steadfast commitment to supporting the Arab family as the fundamental unit of society and a cornerstone of comprehensive development and social stability in the region. The commemoration of this day, designated by the Council of Arab Ministers of Social Affairs, reflects recognition of the vital role the family plays in strengthening social cohesion and shaping future generations.
The Arab family has long been the primary incubator of values and sound upbringing, a guardian of cultural and civilisational identity, and a pillar of national belonging, thus ensuring societal stability and sustainable development. Within the framework of their regional and international obligations, foremost among them the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Arab Charter on Human Rights, Arab states stress the necessity of safeguarding the institution of the family and marriage, upholding their objectives in accordance with sound human nature, and ensuring the dignity, protection, and development of all family members.
In light of the rapid global demographic, social, and technological transformations, the Arab family faces new challenges that require strengthening social protection systems, developing relevant policies and legislation, empowering women and youth, and expanding access to essential services. These measures are vital to safeguarding the family, enhancing its resilience, and promoting the well-being of its members.
The General Secretariat calls for sustained coordination among Arab states and relevant regional and international bodies, and for intensified joint efforts to support the Arab family. It further calls for expanding programmes and initiatives that reinforce its stability and cohesion and provide a safe and nurturing environment for the holistic development of all its members, particularly children and youth.
On this occasion, the General Secretariat affirms that strengthening and empowering the family constitutes a strategic choice for achieving sustainable development in Arab states and securing a more prosperous, just, and dignified future for all members of society
