  • General Secretariat holds a regional workshop on fostering nationality rights within the framework of the Children and Armed Conflict agenda
    Date: 26/11/2025

The General Secretariat of the League of Arab States (Social Affairs Sector – Department of Family and Childhood) is convening a regional workshop on fostering nationality rights within the framework of the Children and Armed Conflict agenda, in partnership with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict (OSRSG-CAAC), on 26 and 27 November in Cairo.

The workshop is being held as part of ongoing cooperation between the League of Arab States and its regional and international partners, and in implementation of relevant global and regional commitments. It represents a key milestone in regional efforts to advance the implementation of the “Arab Declaration on Belonging and Legal Identity,” launched in Cairo in July 2024, which emphasises the importance of birth registration, the strengthening of civil registration systems, the promotion of nationality rights, and gender equality.

The workshop aims to strengthen joint action to protect children in the Arab region and guarantee their legal rights by:

    * Identifying best practices through the exchange of successful national and regional initiatives to improve child protection in conflict and post-conflict contexts.

    * Enhancing policy and legal responses by providing policy recommendations for integrating international child protection standards into national legislation and practice.

    * Supporting capacity-building and offering technical guidance to Member States on implementing durable solutions for displaced and refugee children.

    * Reinforcing cooperation and partnerships between Member States and United Nations agencies.

    * Promoting a deeper understanding of the relationship between nationality rights and the protection of children in armed conflict.

Participants include representatives of national child protection mechanisms in Member States, in addition to experts and specialists from regional organisations working in the field of child rights protection.
