  • The 55th session of the Council of Arab Information Ministers

    ​he 55th ordinary session of the Council of Arab Information Ministers will convene at the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States on 26 November. The session will be preceded by the preparatory meetings of the 103rd session of the Permanent Committee for Arab Media and the 21st session of the Executive Bureau, both scheduled for 25 November.

    His Excellency Ambassador Ahmed Rashid Khattabi, Assistant Secretary-General and head of the Media and Communication Sector, noted that the session will consider a number of pressing issues, foremost among them the Palestinian cause in light of current political, diplomatic, and field developments, as well as the repercussions of the devastating Israeli war on the Gaza Strip, particularly regarding the role of Arab media in keeping pace with the international momentum in support of the Palestinian people.

    Ambassador Khattabi stated that the agenda includes, in particular, the activation of the Arab Media Code of Ethics; follow-up on the media action plan; the phased media plan to combat terrorism; the Arab media roadmap for the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda; the Arab strategy for media and information literacy; the environmental media plan; and the file on engagement with major international media companies. It also encompasses several organisational matters, including the formation of the Executive Bureau, the selection of the Arab Media Capital for 2026, monitoring the activities of the League’s missions and media institutions, and granting observer status to the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (ICESCO) and the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport in the Council of Arab Information Ministers.

    His Excellency further announced that the ninth edition of the Arab Media Excellence Award ceremony will be held on the sidelines of the ministerial session at the General Secretariat. He stated that this distinguished award, presented under the auspices of the League of Arab States, has been sponsored by the State of Kuwait since 2023. The Ambassador expressed his appreciation to the Kuwaiti Ministry of Information for its generous sponsorship, and to the judging committee for its professional adherence to standards of merit, impartiality, and excellence in evaluating the submitted works.

    The head of the Media and Communication Sector added that the current edition of the award, organised under the theme “Youth and New Media,” attracted 150 journalistic submissions from 13 Arab countries spanning print, audio-visual, and digital media. He announced that, in addition to the monetary prizes for the winners, His Excellency Minister Ahmed Assaf, the official media supervisor in the State of Palestine, will be honoured as a gesture of solidarity by the League of Arab States with Palestinian media in light of the violations it faces under Israeli occupation. A number of Arab media professionals will also be recognised.
