The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), in cooperation with the Department of Housing, Water Resources, and Disaster Risk Reduction of the League of Arab States (Economic Affairs Sector) and the Arab Atomic Energy Agency (AAEA), is convening a regional technical meeting within the framework of implementing the Arab Roadmap for Cooperation in Nuclear and Radiological Emergency Preparedness and Response. The meeting, scheduled to take place in Vienna from 3 to 7 November 2025, will bring together experts from Arab countries and the IAEA as part of the Agency’s Regional Technical Cooperation Project.
Ambassador Dr. Ali bin Ibrahim Al-Maliki, Assistant Secretary-General and head of the Economic Affairs Sector at the League of Arab States, said that the meeting highlights the commitment of Arab states to strengthening nuclear and radiological security and to protecting human health and the environment from radiation hazards. This will be achieved through the development of frameworks for scientific and technical cooperation with relevant international organisations, foremost among them the IAEA. The meeting will address several technical topics, including nuclear risk assessment, protection strategies, the use of radioactive dispersion modelling and prediction tools, radiation monitoring networks, crisis communication, and lessons learned from previous incidents.
The meeting forms part of the ongoing efforts of the League of Arab States and its member states to enhance national and regional capacities for responding to potential nuclear and radiological incidents, and to fulfil their commitments under the Arab Strategy for Disaster Risk Reduction (2018–2030), in line with the priorities of the Arab Coordination Mechanism for Disaster Risk Reduction.
The significance of this meeting lies in its alignment with the broader objective of investing in joint Arab capabilities and fostering greater integration among member states in the areas of preparedness and response. Such efforts contribute to enhancing the region’s overall readiness and mitigating the potential impacts of nuclear and radiological emergencies. The meeting also acknowledges the valuable technical support provided by the IAEA and the AAEA in implementing the Arab Roadmap.
