At the behest of His Excellency Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, a delegation from the General Secretariat of the League, headed by His Excellency Ambassador Mohannad Saleh Lajouzi, Assistant Secretary-General and Director-General of the Arab Fund for Technical Assistance to African Countries, and including Mr. Zaid Al-Sabban, Director of the Department of the Horn of Africa and Sudan, participated in the inauguration ceremony of the Arta Peace Memorial on 30 October in the Republic of Djibouti.
The delegation’s participation came in response to an invitation extended by His Excellency President Ismail Omar Guelleh of the Republic of Djibouti. The ceremony was also attended by numerous dignitaries, senior officials, and representatives of regional and international organisations.
The event commemorated the peace efforts hosted by the city of Arta, which marked a historic milestone in the Somali reconciliation process sponsored by the League of Arab States in cooperation with its international partners. The memorial carries profound symbolic significance as a testament to the collective efforts of the Somali people, the international community, and the Republic of Djibouti in laying the foundations for peace and stability in Somalia.
The League of Arab States' participation in this ceremony reflects its steadfast commitment to supporting peace, stability, and development in Somalia and the Horn of Africa, as well as its dedication to strengthening Arab-African solidarity.
In a statement delivered on behalf of the Secretary-General, Ambassador Lajouzi affirmed that the League’s presence at this event asserts its firm commitment to promoting peace initiatives and regional cooperation, in recognition of the pivotal role played by the Republic of Djibouti in advancing the causes of both the Arab and African nations.
