  • Aboul Gheit receives UK Minister of State for the Middle East

    Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, received Mr. Hamish Falconer, UK Minister of State for the Middle East and North Africa, on 2 November as part of ongoing consultations between the League of Arab States and the United Kingdom on regional issues of mutual concern.

    Gamal Roshdy, the Secretary-General’s official spokesperson, stated that the two sides discussed the latest developments in the region, particularly the situation in the occupied Palestinian territories, with a focus on the Gaza Strip, in light of international efforts to consolidate the ceasefire and move forward with the next phase of the 20-point plan.

    During the meeting, Mr. Aboul Gheit underscored the central role of the United States in ensuring Israel’s full adherence to the ceasefire, as well as the responsibility of the guarantor states to implement the political and security arrangements reached in Gaza to enable the prompt commencement of reconstruction efforts.

    The spokesperson added that Mr. Aboul Gheit stressed the vital role of the Palestinian Authority at this stage, particularly in preserving the unity of Palestinian institutions and reinforcing the link between Gaza and the West Bank as an essential basis for a credible path towards establishing a Palestinian state.

    The Secretary-General also highlighted the importance of Britain’s role in supporting just Arab causes and commended its efforts to promote regional stability.

    For his part, the British Minister expressed his country’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with the League of Arab States across various fields, asserting the importance of joint coordination to address regional challenges.

    Roshdy added that the meeting also addressed several other regional issues, most notably the grave humanitarian situation in El Fasher, Sudan. Both sides agreed on the urgent need to reach a comprehensive ceasefire and deliver humanitarian aid to the population. Mr. Aboul Gheit reaffirmed that safeguarding Sudan’s unity and territorial integrity remains a fundamental priority for the League of Arab States.
