Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, participated in the opening of the Regional Conference on International Judicial Cooperation in Combating Terrorism, organised by the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States in cooperation with the European Union and the Lebanese Ministry of Justice, under the patronage and in the presence of the President of the Lebanese Republic.
In his address, Mr. Aboul Gheit highlighted the importance of ongoing cooperation between the League of Arab States and the European Union within the framework of the strategic dialogue between the two organisations, particularly in the field of judicial cooperation and counter-terrorism. He noted that the Criminal Justice Project represents a distinguished model of an integrated approach to addressing shared challenges.
Gamal Roshdy, the Secretary-General’s spokesperson, stated that Mr. Aboul Gheit commended Arab efforts to repatriate former fighters and their families, and to establish national mechanisms for their prosecution, rehabilitation, and reintegration. He stressed that the League of Arab States has consistently affirmed the need to combat terrorism in any country within a framework of full adherence to international law and respect for human rights, thereby helping to prevent the re-emergence of the vicious cycles of extremism and terrorism.
Roshdy added that Mr. Aboul Gheit also praised the initiatives and efforts aimed at developing Arab systems for security, legal, and judicial cooperation, with the objective of strengthening institutional coordination among Arab states. This is being pursued through the development of innovative mechanisms that respond to emerging challenges, in close cooperation and coordination with various regional and international partners.
