    Date: 24/09/2025

Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, met on 24 September with His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Al-Menfi, President of the Libyan Presidential Council, on the sidelines of the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.

Gamal Roshdy, the Secretary-General's official spokesman, stated that Mr. Aboul Gheit reaffirmed the League of Arab States' full support for efforts to unify Libyan institutions and to hold comprehensive and transparent elections. He commended the important and constructive role played by the Presidential Council during the transitional period, stressing that the League of Arab States remains committed to the principles affirmed in the resolutions of its Council at all levels, namely: safeguarding Libya’s unity, respecting its sovereignty and independence, and rejecting all forms of foreign interference in its internal affairs. The Secretary-General further asserted that the solution in Libya must be a comprehensive political one—Libyan-owned and Libyan-led—initiated by the Libyans themselves, and facilitated by the United Nations in order to meet their aspirations. He also reiterated the League of Arab States' support for the mandate of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), as authorised by Security Council resolutions.

The spokesman added that the two sides reviewed the latest political developments in Libya and the ongoing efforts aimed at achieving stability and national unity, in a manner that serves the interests of the brotherly Libyan people and preserves the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

For his part, the President of the Libyan Presidential Council expressed his appreciation for the pivotal role played by the League of Arab States in supporting efforts to resolve the Libyan crisis, stressing the importance of continued coordination with the League of Arab States and the international community.

The meeting also addressed regional and international developments of mutual concern, as well as ways to strengthen Arab cooperation across various fields, particularly in combating terrorism and limiting foreign interference in Arab affairs.

At the conclusion of the meeting, both sides underscored the importance of continuing consultation and coordination between the League of Arab States and the Libyan Presidential Council in the service of common Arab interests and the aspirations of Arab peoples for security, stability, and development.
