At the invitation of the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States (Energy Department), the 16th meeting of the Electricity Experts Committee is being held on 27 August at the headquarters of the General Secretariat, with the participation of electricity experts from member states. The agenda meant to be discussed includes the Arab Common Electricity Market and the peaceful uses of atomic energy.
His Excellency Ambassador Dr. Ali bin Ibrahim Al-Maliki, head of the Economic Affairs Sector, underscored the significance of convening the Electricity Experts Committee at this time, following the ratification by several countries of the General Agreement on the Arab Common Electricity Market, which was broadly welcomed by member states. He noted that the market will enter into force shortly. His Excellency further stressed the importance of the Arab Common Electricity Market and the need to establish a secretariat and specialised committees to support its work.
He also highlighted that among the key items on the committee's agenda is the Arab Forum on Prospects for Nuclear-Powered Electricity Generation and Seawater Desalination, to be held in December in cooperation with the Arab Atomic Energy Agency, the Secretariat of the Arab Ministerial Council for Electricity, and the Jordan Atomic Energy Commission.
