Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, convened with Mr. António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, in a meeting that included delegations from both organisations. The meeting was held on the sidelines of the International Conference on the Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine and the Implementation of the Two-State Solution, convened at United Nations Headquarters in New York from 28 to 30 July.
Gamal Roshdy, the spokesperson for the Secretary-General, stated that the meeting addressed the dire humanitarian tragedy unfolding in Gaza as a result of Israel’s ongoing war of extermination against civilians in the Strip, as well as the continuing efforts to secure a ceasefire and bring an end to the war.
Both Aboul Gheit and Guterres underscored the critical importance of the conference on the two-state solution in keeping this framework viable and in paving the way for a serious process towards ending the occupation and establishing a Palestinian state.
The spokesperson added that the meeting also covered developments in Sudan, Libya, and Syria, as well as the Iranian nuclear file.
