The Intellectual Property and Competitiveness Unit of the League of Arab States is commemorating World Intellectual Property Day under the theme "Intellectual Property and Music: Feeling the Rhythm of Intellectual Property " on 6 May at the headquarters of the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States in Cairo.
Minister Plenipotentiary Dr. Maha Bakhit, Director of the Legal Affairs Department and head of the Intellectual Property and Competitiveness Unit at the League, stated that this year's theme spotlights the crucial role of intellectual property protection as a catalyst for creativity and innovation, with a particular emphasis on the music industry. Copyright and related rights are foundational to empowering artists to derive financial benefit from their creations, fostering innovation, and curbing piracy and unlawful exploitation.
This year's observance stands out for its exploration of the intersection between musical artistry and legal frameworks, particularly against the backdrop of contemporary challenges in the intellectual property sphere amid digital transformation, the rise of artificial intelligence, and the proliferation of streaming platforms.
The programme features a series of sessions addressing a range of pivotal topics, including the challenges confronting artistic rights, strategic perspectives on nurturing musical creativity, the future of music in the digital era, and case studies highlighting experiences from various Arab countries in the realm of copyright and related rights protection.
The event brings together government officials from Arab intellectual property offices, legal experts, researchers, and musicians with a vested interest in intellectual property rights.
