  • Egypt signs Statute of Arab Centre for Social Policy Studies and Poverty Eradication in Arab Countries

    ​The Arab Republic of Egypt formally initialed the Statute of the Arab Centre for Social Policy Studies and Poverty Eradication in Arab Countries on 25 February at the headquarters of the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States. The establishment of this Centre was welcomed by the Council of the League of Arab States at the Summit Level, in accordance with Resolution 738, the 29th ordinary session C3 on 15 April 2018, and subsequently approved at the Ministerial Level pursuant to Resolution 8706, 156th ordinary session C2 on 9 September 2021. The centre's headquarters will be in Amman, Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.  

    Representing the Arab Republic of Egypt, His Excellency Ambassador Mohamed Mustafa Urfi, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs and Permanent Representative of Egypt to the League of Arab States, signed the statute. On behalf of the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States, His Excellency Ambassador Dr. Mohamed El-Amin Ould Akik, Assistant Secretary-General and head of the Legal Affairs Sector, signed the statute.  

    The signing ceremony was attended by Minister Plenipotentiary Dr. Sally Samir Sabry, Director of the Department of Treaties and International Law, and Minister Plenipotentiary Mr. Tariq Al-Nabulsi, Director of the Department of Development and Social Policies.  

    The Arab Centre for Social Policy Studies and Poverty Eradication in Arab Countries seeks to foster cooperation, coordination, and the exchange of expertise and information among member states in the realm of social policies and multidimensional poverty reduction. The centre's programmes, activities, and initiatives will be funded through multiple sources, including:  

    1. Contributions from the host country's government.  

    2. Allocated support from donor countries.  

    3. Assistance provided by United Nations agencies.  

    4. Contributions, grants, and donations from Arab and international financial institutions, as approved by the Board of Directors.  

    According to Article (12), paragraph (2) of the statute, the agreement shall enter into force 30 days after the deposit of ratification or accession documents by at least seven member states. These documents will be deposited with the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States, which will notify all other member states of each deposit and its corresponding date.  

    Egypt is the fifth Arab country to sign the statute, following the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, the Republic of Tunisia, the State of Palestine, and the Kingdom of Morocco.
