The State of Qatar formalised its accession to the Agreement Regulating Transit Transport between the States of the League of Arab States (amended) on 18 September in a signing ceremony held at the headquarters of the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States. The agreement had been previously endorsed by the Economic and Social Council under its Resolution No. (R.2327- O.S. 109- 10/2/2022).
Representing the Qatari side, His Excellency Ambassador Tariq Ali Faraj Al-Ansari, Ambassador of the State of Qatar to Cairo and Permanent Representative to the League of Arab States, signed the agreement. On behalf of the League of Arab States, the agreement was signed by His Excellency Ambassador Dr. Mohamed El-Amin Ould Akik, Assistant Secretary-General and head of the Legal Affairs Sector.
The amended Agreement to Regulate Transit Transport between the Arab League States is designed to fortify and expand economic ties among member states, in line with the provisions of Article Two of the Charter of the League of Arab States, which underscores the necessity of close cooperation in economic and financial matters. The agreement will enter into force once ratification documents are deposited by five member states and will subsequently apply to additional Arab countries one month after they deposit their ratification or accession instruments. As stipulated in Article 39, the provisions of this amended agreement will replace those of the original 1977 Agreement Regulating Transit Transport between Arab States.
Qatar is the second Arab country, after Libya, to sign the amended agreement.
