The General Secretariat of the League of Arab States (Social Affairs Sector - Family and Childhood Department), in collaboration with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), is convening the Regional Meeting on the Follow-up of the Implementation of the Arab Strategy for Child Protection in Asylum Situation in the Arab Region on 17 September. The meeting is taking place online, featuring the participation of key entities and officials from member states, including child protection officials from UN agencies, as well as practitioners and decision-makers engaged in child protection issues across the relevant countries.
The Arab Strategy for Child Protection in Asylum Situation in the Arab Region is being implemented in accordance with the recommendations issued during the 12th meeting of the Follow-up Committee to Halt Violence against Children, held at the General Secretariat in November 2014. At that meeting, the Technical Secretariat (Social Affairs Sector - Family and Childhood Department) was tasked with developing an Arab strategy for the protection of refugee children in partnership with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
The objectives of the meeting include assessing the progress made at the national level since the adoption of the Strategy and its associated Action Plan, while also gathering precise information on the challenges faced by Member States in its implementation. Additionally, the meeting aims to review current and planned preventive measures and response mechanisms for child protection, fostering engagement in actionable steps and commitments towards a comprehensive approach that encompasses relevant ministries to advance this agenda.
