  • General Secretariat statement on International Nurses Day
    Date: 12/05/2024
The world commemorates International Nurses Day on 12 May annually. Ambassador Dr. Haifa Abu Ghazaleh, Assistant Secretary-General and head of the Social Affairs Sector, said that the 2024 celebration carries the theme "Nurses together: A force for global health." The theme underscores the significance of the nursing profession and prompts strategic considerations to bolster and propel its advancement.
Ambassador Dr. Abu Ghazaleh emphasised the importance of investing in the nursing profession to fortify healthcare systems. She highlighted the Council of Arab Health Ministers' commitment to enhancing nursing through the approved Arab strategy for advancing nursing and midwifery professions. This strategy is a collaborative effort involving Arab member states' health ministries and partnerships with the United Nations Population Fund and the World Health Organisation Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean.
Dr. Abu Ghazaleh stated that the League of Arab States, acting as the Technical Secretariat of the Council of Arab Ministers of Health, consistently monitors and supports Arab member states in implementing the strategy. This includes leveraging its outcomes and updating national strategies to align with regional goals.
Ambassador Dr. Abu Ghazaleh highlighted the Council of Arab Health Ministers' commitment to supporting the nursing and midwifery professions, recognising the persistent shortage of healthcare workers. This shortage has a detrimental impact on primary healthcare plans and comprehensive health coverage. In response, the Council has adopted guiding legislation for nursing and midwifery professions to bolster national regulations in observance of International Nurses Day.
Dr. Abu Ghazaleh extended her appreciation to medical groups, particularly nursing teams, across Arab countries, including those in challenging environments like the Gaza Strip and Sudan. Despite facing exceptional and catastrophic circumstances and the collapse of health systems, these teams continue to shoulder significant burdens with dedication and resilience.
