Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, the
Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, met on 11 October with
Mr. Antonio Tiani, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Italy, and Mr.
Gabrielus Landerberg, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania,
during their visits to Cairo.
Gamal
Roshdy, the official spokesperson for the Secretary-General, said the
two meetings primarily addressed the escalating situation in the Gaza
Strip. The Secretary-General emphasised the urgency of ending the
ongoing conflict to prevent it from spiralling into a more dangerous and
uncontrollable situation. He stressed that seeking retribution against
Gaza's residents through a policy of collective punishment goes against
international law and will not achieve the desired security.
Furthermore,
Mr. Aboul Gheit expressed his firm opposition to the targeting of
civilians and stressed the need to ensure the safety of Palestinians. He
also highlighted the importance of addressing the underlying causes
that have led to this perilous situation, particularly the political
stalemate and the continuous erosion of the foundations of the two-state
 solution.
