Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, met on 26 September with Ms. Tanja Fajon, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Slovenia, on the sidelines of the high-level segment of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Gamal Roshdy, the Spokesperson for the Secretary-General, stated that Mr. Aboul Gheit expressed the League of Arab States' appreciation for Slovenia’s efforts and its supportive role with regard to Arab causes, particularly the Palestinian cause, within the Security Council. He also commended Slovenia’s launch of the Joint Commitments Initiative in support of UNRWA.
The Spokesperson added that both sides affirmed their rejection of the Israeli scheme to reoccupy the Gaza Strip and annex the West Bank, as well as the assaults carried out by Israeli settlers against civilians in the West Bank.
They further warned of the grave regional repercussions of the ongoing Israeli aggression against Gaza and Israel’s unlawful violations of the sovereignty of regional states. The meeting also focused on international initiatives proposed to end the war and stressed the need to consolidate positions towards a common path leading to an immediate ceasefire, the exchange of hostages and prisoners, and the commencement of reconstruction efforts.
The Spokesperson noted that, during his meeting with the Slovenian Minister, Mr. Aboul Gheit stressed the importance of enhancing coordination and consultation with the Arab side on issues of mutual concern.
