  • League Secretary-General meets with Cyprus Foreign Minister

    Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, met on 24 September with Mr. Constantinos Kombos, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus, on the sidelines of the high-level segment of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

    Gamal Roshdy, the Secretary-General's official spokesperson, stated that Mr. Aboul Gheit expressed his appreciation to Cyprus for its supportive positions on the Palestinian cause in international forums. He noted, in this regard, that the League of Arab States is counting on Cyprus’ presidency of the European Union during the first half of next year to reinforce Arab-European cooperation mechanisms in various fields, as well as to intensify pressure on European states to halt the export of weapons to Israel, which are being used in its war against civilians in the Gaza Strip.

    The spokesperson added that the two sides exchanged views on the grave repercussions of Israel’s continued attacks on countries in the region, particularly the brutal aggression against the Gaza Strip. They affirmed that the two-state solution remains the foundation for any future arrangements concerning the fate of the Palestinian people, and stressed the need to provide a credible political horizon for the establishment of the Palestinian state.

    The spokesperson further noted that, during his meeting with the Cypriot minister, Mr. Aboul Gheit stressed the importance of strengthening coordination and consultation with the Arab side on issues of common interest.
