The Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, welcomed the political roadmap presented by Ms. Hanna Tetteh, head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), during her briefing to the Security Council on 21 August. The roadmap is designed to pave the way for the unification of Libyan institutions and the holding of presidential and legislative elections.
Gamal Roshdy, Spokesperson for the Secretary-General, conveyed Mr. Aboul Gheit’s affirmation of support for UN efforts to end the state of division and restore stability in Libya. He noted that the proposed roadmap constitutes an opportunity that all parties must seize in order to achieve a comprehensive political settlement. He further underscored the importance of the UN Mission’s continued coordination with Libyan stakeholders, as well as with regional and international partners, to secure the necessary political and technical support for the roadmap’s implementation.
The Spokesperson stressed the need to ensure Libyan ownership and leadership of the political process, reaffirming the League’s commitment to supporting Libyans in bridging differences and resuming dialogue, while upholding Libya’s unity, independence, and sovereignty.
