The 64th session of the Arab Charter on Human Rights Committee commenced on 27 January at the General Secretariat headquarters of the League of Arab States. The meeting included the 27th session of the Committee, dedicated to reviewing the second periodic report of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) over 27-28 January. The review aligns with the UAE's commitments under the Arab Charter on Human Rights.
The UAE submitted its report to the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States in September 2024, outlining the measures adopted by the UAE to implement the rights and freedoms enshrined in the Charter, following the concluding observations and recommendations issued after its first periodic report in 2019.
The Committee's 27th session evaluates the UAE's progress in fulfilling its legal obligations under the Charter, focusing on several key areas, including: the goals of the Charter; the right to life and physical integrity; the principles of equality and non-discrimination; civil and political freedoms; combating slavery and human trafficking; judicial systems and the right to seek asylum; freedom of opinion and expression; the rights to health and education; and the protection of the family, with particular emphasis on women and children.
An interactive dialogue is planned between members of the Charter Committee and the UAE delegation, comprising representatives from various government agencies. The discussions are attended by representatives from permanent delegations to the League of Arab States, alongside participants from the Arab Parliament, the Permanent Arab Committee on Human Rights, the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf, the Arab Network of National Human Rights Institutions, the Council of Arab Interior Ministers, national human rights institutions, and civil society organisations.
