Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, delivered a lecture this morning, 29 April, at the Saud Al-Nasser Al-Sabah Diplomatic Institute in Kuwait. The event was attended by members of the Kuwaiti diplomatic corps, as well as representatives of accredited Arab and foreign diplomatic missions in the State of Kuwait.
Gamal Roshdy, the official spokesperson for the Secretary-General, stated that Mr. Aboul Gheit focused his lecture on the accelerating transformations in global affairs, stressing that volatility and uncertainty have become defining features of the contemporary international landscape.
In his address, Mr. Aboul Gheit examined the dynamics of great power competition from a historical standpoint. He noted that the era of relative stability following the Cold War—characterised by US dominance—was a transitory episode, and that the core nature of international relations remains grounded in rivalry and strategic contestation. This is manifest today in the intensifying competition among the United States, China, and Russia.
The spokesman added that the Secretary-General also addressed the prevailing conditions in the Arab region, which has experienced profound instability over the past decade. Mr. Aboul Gheit attributed this turmoil to a combination of internal disruptions and foreign interventions that sought abrupt transformations, often resulting in disorder and prolonged crises. He warned that the sovereignty and cohesion of some Arab states remain under existential threat.
Furthermore, Mr. Aboul Gheit highlighted the erosion of moral consistency and the prevalence of double standards in certain Western circles, particularly evident in the response to Israel’s ongoing and brutal war on Gaza.
