  • Aboul Gheit condemns burning a copy of Quran in Stockholm; holds Swedish authorities responsible

    ​The Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, vehemently denounced the decision by Swedish authorities to allow the burning of the Holy Quran at the hands of extremists on the first day of Eid Al-Adha (Greater Bairam).

    Mr. Aboul Gheit asserted that it is the duty of governments to deter the proliferation of extremist ideologies and to refrain from any leniency towards individuals or groups that propagate hatred and Islamophobia. He emphasised that the appropriate response to such tendencies is one of unwavering determination and resoluteness. Furthermore, Mr. Aboul Gheit underscored that the vilification of the sacred beliefs of others is not encompassed within the scope of freedom of expression.

    Gamal Roshdy, the spokesperson for the Secretary-General, conveyed Mr. Aboul Gheit's condemnation of the authorities' leniency with this abhorrent act, despite the prevailing awareness that this generates waves of animosity between various communities and followers of diverse faiths. He held the Swedish government accountable for the repercussions of this egregious incident.
