  • League warns against plans to build thousands of settlements in Occupied Territories
    التاريخ: 2023/06/13

Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, warned against Israel's plans to construct thousands of settlements in the occupied West Bank. He noted that these plans pose a severe threat to the two-state solution by usurping the very lands which are intended to serve as the foundation for a future Palestinian state.

Mr. Aboul Gheit urged the US administration to adopt a resolute stance against the proposed Israeli plans as a means of safeguarding the two-state solution that Washington is actively advocating. He emphasised that there is no peace with settlements, rendering it implausible to discuss the prospect of a settlement between Palestinians and Israelis or regional peace while the Palestinian territories continue to be eroded on a daily basis.

According to Gamal Roshdy, the spokesperson for the Secretary-General, there are reports circulating on various media platforms regarding the matter. He noted that the right-wing Israeli government is actively seeking an approval from the US to advance its plans. Roshdy added that Mr. Aboul Gheit said that the Netanyahu government is unwilling to participate as a partner in a peaceful political process aimed at achieving a comprehensive settlement. Instead, its primary objective appears to be placating the most extremist factions within the domestic political arena, including settlement groups and religious nationalist currents.
