  • Aboul Gheit sends a message to Honduran President: Opening of a diplomatic office in Jerusalem is contrary to international law
    التاريخ: 2019/08/30

The Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, sent a written message to Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez on the eve of his planned visit to Israel on Friday, during which he is expected to announce the opening of a diplomatic office for his country in the occupied city of Jerusalem, as a preamble to moving the Embassy of Honduras from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

An official source at the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States said that Aboul Gheit affirmed in his letter the condemnation of the position of "Honduras" contrary to international law and to the stable international consensus on Jerusalem as an occupied territory since 1967. This is of great importance not only to the Arab world, but to the Muslims of the world.

The official source stressed that the Arab League is keen to coordinate Arab collective positions towards a limited number of countries that moved their embassies to Jerusalem, or opened commercial offices there with the aim of establishing recognition of the occupied city as the capital of Israel, similar to the decision taken by the United States in December 2017 in this regard. The source added that the collective Arab positions succeed in some cases in exerting pressure on countries that decide to move their embassies to Jerusalem, indicating the retreat of the government of `` Paraguay '' in September 2018 from a decision taken by a previous government to move the embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, stressing the importance of continuing to exert pressure on countries that may make such a move.
