Mission
      1. Supports and highlights Arab endeavours for implementation of the 2030 Agenda

      2. Develops a unified Arab vision on priorities, challenges and implementation mechanisms (through the Arab guidelines on implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in Arab countries).

      3. Enhances coordination between specialized ministerial councils, joint Arab action institutions and committees, and seeks to bridge gaps in the joint Arab action system.

      4. Seeks to achieve integrity within sustainable development goals (SDGs) and targets, and to create balance between the three economic, social and environmental dimensions.

      5.  Seeks to strengthen building of partnerships and alliances with development partners at the national, regional and international levels.

      6. Seeks to strengthen capacity-building in the Arab States to implement their sustainable development national plans.

      7. Supports the Arab States with no national plans for implementation of the 2030 SDGs and provides the necessary assistance in this regard.


Target
  • Establishment

    Recalling the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development endorsed by the world leaders in the United Nations Summit on Sustainable Development 2015, and the resolution adopted by the 26th Arab Summit held in Sharm El-Sheikh in March 2015, which emphasized strengthening cooperation with the Member States, ministerial councils and the specialized Arab organizations concerning the implementation of SDGs, the Arab League Secretary-General issued Resolution 91/1 on 14th April 2016 to establish the Department of Sustainable Development and International Cooperation within the framework of the Secretariat General to support the Arab endeavors for implementation of the 2030 SDGs, and to consolidate and promote the SDG concept in the Arab region.

    Vision

    Encouraging inter-Arab cooperation and coordination at the national, regional and international levels, and with all relevant partners concerned with follow-up of the implementation of SDGs in the Arab region, which shall positively reflect on boosting growth rates in the Arab States, thus influencing the Arab citizens and contributing to better living standards

    Mandate

    1. Acts as the Secretariat of the Arab Committee on Implementation Follow-up of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in the Arab region (established by Resolution 2134 issued by the 99th Ordinary Session of the Economic and Social Council on 16th February 2017).

    2. Adopting programmes and activities based on Goal 17 "strengthening global partnerships to support and achieve the targets of the 2030 Agenda", as the implementation cornerstone.

    3. Submitting regular reports on sustainable development issues to the Secretary-General.

    4. Enhancing continuous cooperation and coordination with the secretariats of the specialized ministerial councils and specialized Arab organizations for SDGs implementation, including sustainable development data and indicators.

    5. Preparing progress reports on the implementation of Sustainable Development Agenda in the Arab countries, covering the review of Member States endeavours, specialized ministerial councils, joint Arab action institutions and the Secretariat General with an aim to evaluate the progress achieved in this regard; and the recent developments in the area of Sustainable Development. These reports are duly to the Arab Economic and Social Development Summit, as well as the World Summit on Sustainable Development.

    6. Organizing an annual forum that includes Arab States, partners and stakeholders to share expertise, lessons learned and best practices, and discuss international and Arab forthcoming efforts in the area of sustainable development.

    7. Reinforcing Arab, regional and international cooperation through building partnerships with regional and international institutions and civil society organizations concerned with sustainable development, and cooperating with the private sector to support the establishment of development programmes and projects in the Arab States.

    8. Implementing Memoranda of Understanding between the Secretariat General and other regional and international organizations, and their implementation follow-up to achieve progress that shall have significant effect on Arab countries.

    9. Enhancing Arab States' capacity through dialogue forums, workshops and lectures, in which international experts on development participate, with cooperation of regional and international partners.

    10. Acting as member of Regional Coordination Mechanism working group concerned with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the Department represents the Secretariat General at its regular meetings.

    11. Active participation in regional and international conferences and activities on sustainable development to highlight the endeavours exerted by the League of Arab States in this regard, and to bring prominent international expertise and best practices to the Arab region, according to directions of the Secretary-General.

    12. Communicating with the ministries concerned with  the implementation of national sustainable development action plans in the Arab countries.
