Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, reiterated his condemnation of the Iranian attacks against Arab states, describing the situation as dangerous.
In a press statement delivered at the League’s headquarters on 4 March, Mr. Aboul Gheit said: “The attacks carried out by Iran are wholly condemnable. They constitute not only a flagrant violation of international law and the Charter of the United Nations, but also an assault on the principles of good neighbourliness. They are creating an unprecedented state of hostility between Iran and its Arab neighbours, and are producing a deep rift between Iran and this neighbourhood that will leave a profound imprint on the future.”
The Secretary-General added: “No one underestimates the calamities of the war that Iran is facing. At the same time, however, there can be no acceptable justification for targeting neighbouring Arab states in an attempt to drag them into a war that is not their own—especially given that a number of Arab countries have worked tirelessly to avert the outbreak of this catastrophic conflict. This is a grave strategic miscalculation by Iran, one that I hope they will rectify by immediately halting their attacks.”
The Secretary-General concluded: “It is extremely dangerous for the current confrontation to expand and for these conditions to persist without swift correction on Iran’s part. Iran must come to its senses and rectify the situation with all the states that have been targeted before it is too late.”
