An official source at the General Secretariat said that the meeting dealt with the latest developments in the Palestinian situation in light of what the Palestinian cause is facing through the ongoing attempts to undermine its foundations and empty it of its content and circumvent the determinants of a political settlement as agreed by the international community. The source pointed out that Aboul Gheit was interested in listening to President Abu Mazen's assessments regarding the coming stage in light of the results of the Israeli elections and the positions of the US administration regarding the settlement pointing that there was a discussion about the importance of coordinated efforts to maintain the status of the international consensus in support of the Palestinian rights, including the renewal of UNRWA's mandate without change and the rejection of the unilateral declarations regarding Jerusalem.
The source quoted the Secretary-General as saying that the current stage requires the Arabs to stand next to Palestine, the people and the authority, in the face of Israeli-US efforts to harass the Palestinians and put them under economic and political pressures, to get them to accept what they have rejected in the past, which will not be, adding that the unilateral declarations, whether by Israel or the United States, have no legal effect, since the determinants of a peaceful solution according to the two-state formula are known and undisputed by the overwhelming majority of the world, and that attempts to achieve the so-called Economic peace will lead to nothing unless it is linked to a clear political horizon leading to the end of the occupation and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state along the lines of June 4, 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
