A passionate, humanitarian driven, motivator leader and a women's rights advocate, Her Excellency Dr. Haifa Abu Ghazaleh is the Assistant Secretary General - Head of Social Sector at the League of Arab States (LAS) on August 2018 and previously headed the Media and Communication Sector from 2013 to 2018. She is a laureate of numerous prestigious international and regional women leadership awards, who published over 100 papers, publications, and journal articles based on her knowledge and expertise. Her Excellency Dr. Haifa Abu Ghazaleh was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2005 following her nomination selection for the '1000 women for Noble Peace Prize 2005'.
Before becoming the Assistant Secretary-General at the League, Dr. Abu Ghazaleh was appointed as a Special Envoy for the League of Arab States Secretary-General to the Civil Society, and as a Jordanian Representative to the Arab Women Organization (AWO) and a Member of the Executive Committee. While serving at the Arab Women Organization, Dr. Abu Ghazaleh was appointed by His Majesty King Abdullah II as a Minister of Tourism and Antiquities in 2011 and a Senator to the Jordanian Upper House of Parliament in 2009.
During the period of 2007 – 2011, Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah II appointed Dr. Abu Ghazaleh as a Secretary-General at the National Council for Family Affairs (NCFA). Dr. Abu Ghazaleh conducted pioneering work for more than 12 years while being the Regional Director of UN Women (previously known as UNIFEM) - Arab States Regional Office.
Among Her Excellency Dr. Haifa Abu Ghazaleh's most remarkable achievements as the Assistant Secretary-General - Head of Media and Communication at the League of Arab States, was the formulation of Pan Arab Network for Early Warning and Crisis Responses through a joint LAS-EU-UNDP programme to respond to political, social, economic and environmental crises.
For more than three decades, Dr. Abu Ghazaleh has been heavily involved and active at the Global Regional and National level in the areas of policy and legislative reform, gender mainstreaming, strategic planning, human rights, peace and security, Media & Communication and Early warning. Her Excellency Dr. Haifa Abu Ghazaleh is a champion for the rights of women and gender equality.
Dr. Abu Ghazaleh holds two Ph.Ds in Education & Psychology, an MA in Educational Counseling and a BA in Psychology and Sociology.
